Chapter 10

Screaming at the top of their lungs, Fenix and Gaius tumbled out of a wall of crackling light and fell hard on the ground.

Gaius hugged himself and curled up into a ball. “Damn, that was murder on the bones.”

Fenix pushed herself up on her hands and knees, gasping for breath. She shook her head to get rid of the buzzing in her ears.

Every cell in her body quivered, still agitated by the jolt that ran through her as she passed through the portal. Her head was spinning, and she felt strangely disconnected from her body.

“I think I’m going to throw up,” she murmured.

She swallowed hard and squeezed her eyes shut, hoping it would help to steady her stomach.

Gaius rolled onto his back and splayed out his arms and legs. “This is becoming too much of a habit.”

“You okay?” Fenix asked.

“I’ll tell you in about ten minutes.”

“I don’t think we have that much time,” Fenix said, even though she felt she needed more like an hour to feel normal again.

As she pushed herself backward to sit on the ground, her eyes roamed their surroundings for the first time. She had to squint as the light hurt her eyes; it was brighter than even the sunniest day she’d ever experienced.

They had landed on a path in a forest that led to hill, beyond which Fenix couldn’t see. The forest was lush with light green undergrowth and flowers of every color imaginable. The trees were short with low branches that spread out and gave much shade. Not far off, a shallow river gurgled over rocks that seemed to sparkle.

Impressed, Fenix leaned against the nearest tree and inhaled deeply as she took in the enchanting scenery.

“You don’t have permission to touch,” a voice growled.

Fenix jumped to her feet, her heart pounding. She swiveled her head to see who spoke but saw no one.

Gaius sat bolt upright, fear on his face. “Who’s there?”

Fenix reached into her jacket for the knife at her waist, but her head was spinning and she stumbled forward. Just as she braced herself by resting her hand on the rough bark of the tree, the voice roared again.

“Remove your dirty paw.”

Startled, Fenix pulled her hand away and jumped back.

“What the—” Gaius got to his feet and joined Fenix.

“What are you two staring at?” the voice growled.

Fenix turned to Gaius, astonished. “A talking tree?”

Gaius hunched his shoulders and leaned forward to inspect the rough bark.

From where she stood, Fenix could see no opening that would act as a mouth. She looked at the low branches, but it was just a tree. Slowly and cautiously, she circled it, but saw nothing out of the ordinary.

“Scat!” the voice said. “You have no business being here.”

“You can see us?” Fenix asked hesitantly.

“Dumb question. You think I’m blind or something? ’Course I can see.”

This time, Fenix didn’t hesitate. “Did you see anyone bring a human baby through that portal?”

Smack!

Without warning, a branch swung down and whacked Fenix on her back. She stumbled to her knees, her flat cap tumbling off her head.
